Hummingbird Energy: On Reframing Your Perspective

7 October 2026

On my birthday last month, I got a new tattoo. Like every tattoo, even the dubiously chosen, there’s a story.

Do you ever sometimes feel like you’re too much? Too loud, too quiet, too bold, too meek, too happy, too sad? You get my point.

I sometimes worry about my “too much”: too high-strung, my energy humming too high, as though I drank far and away too much caffeine. (I actually never drink caffeine anymore because it makes me more high-strung.) Am I too peppy? Do I talk too much?

Quite possibly.

But I have a good story; a life-changing story.

I used to be the administrator for a sweet local camp and in April of 2020 (we all remember 2020, right?) we determined that we needed to cancel all five of our summer camp weeks. But in early summer, restrictions were being lifted and everyone was feeling better about being next to other humans and we thought maybe we could do one week, something small and contained. And so we did. We gathered a lovely group of young staffers and we thoughtfully planned out the spaces to ensure the health of all.

I swept in on the first day before camp and helped set up, left the staff to it, then swept back in at the end of the final day to help clean up. In my usual way, I ran around gathering, cleaning, solving problems, and answering the young staffers' questions. All of this was pretty run-of-the-mill in terms of my personal MO, but then something amazing (for me) happened.
