Rooms of Our Own: My New Old Office
15 August 2026

When we bought our house in 2021, it was a tiny three-bedroom ranch. We planned an addition to make it spacious enough for our family. We moved into the house in July, when the pandemic was still at its height and so were the costs of building materials. Our contractor suggested we wait until the spring to see if costs stabilized. At the time, I was working full-time from home, mostly at the dining room table.
We were able to start our renovation in April, 2022, and nine long months later, the room that had been one of the bedrooms was now my office. We took almost two feet from the room and gave it to the kitchen (a very wise choice), but she’s still a nice little size. Fast-forward: three years ago I left the work-from-home job and started working at the school. My little office was abandoned. I used it for yoga and aerobics, and also as something of a dumping ground. I moved my workspace into the sunroom, which opens off from the kitchen. I wanted to be in the center of things, not sequestered away. (I am on borrowed time with these children of mine, you know?)
And for a couple of years it worked.
Until it did not.
